Mark Whitacre is best known for his whistleblower role in the Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) price-fixing case in the mid-1990s. He was the FBI informant (technically called within the FBI as cooperating witness) on this case and wore a wire for almost three years. However, he was later charged for several white-collar crimes including price-fixing, tax fraud, and money laundering that occurred during his tenure as President of the Fortune 500 company’s BioProducts Division. Whitacre served over eight years in federal prison, almost all of that in minimum-security camps. Several FBI agents, including the FBI supervisor of the ADM case, have lobbied for a Presidential Pardon for Whitacre throughout Whitacre’s prison tenure and they continue this effort still. Today, the FBI call Whitacre a national hero. Rare in prison life, Whitacre was able to keep his family together. For example, his wife, his high-school sweetheart, and children moved to each location that Whitacre was located and they visited him every weekend. Whitacre was also able to maintain steady relationships with several friends, university professors, and professionals in the biotechnology industry while in prison. Furthermore, he continued his education in prison via correspondence earning multiple advanced degrees on top of his original education which included B.S. and M.S. degrees from Ohio State University and a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. At Cornell, Whitacre did his Ph.D. dissertation research on the biochemical role of selenium at the cellular level under the direction of a world renowned selenium scientist and they published several scientific journal articles from that research. The end result for Whitacre after his release was that he became the President, Technology and Business Development, of a California biotechnology company, Cypress Systems, Inc. Cypress is very involved with selenium & cancer prevention research and selenium is the company’s flagship product. Whitacre started this job the day after his release in December, 2006. In March of 2008, Dr. Whitacre was promoted to COO & President of Operations of Cypress Systems, Inc., the position that he still holds today. Mark Whitacre is a proven voice for RE-ENTRY, which is summarized here.
